Ground

In-game ground tile.

Ground is the most basic and common Ground Type as it is the place where Rock Raiders walk, bases are built, and battles are fought. The appearance of the ground, as do almost all texture types, differ between different Terrains. Squares of flat ground can be used for the construction of Buildings by use of creating Power Paths. Ground squares can also be turned Rubble by Rock Slides, Cave-Ins, and Monsters (if they break Power Paths). They can also be turned into squares of Lava by Eroding Lava. Rock Raiders, Slimy Slugs, Monsters, Small Spiders, and most Vehicles can only travel on ground (as opposed to Lava and Water), though certain vehicles are adapted to cross these).

Typical ground appears dark purple on the Radar in open caverns.

Water

Water is found on many maps, and even though Rock Raiders cannot cross it, it will not do damage. Only the Rapid Rider and the Cargo Carrier can cross over water, although flying vehicles can go over it. Water can exist in all Terrains, albeit in a more icy appearing form in Ice Caverns.

Water appears blue on the Radar in open caverns.

The water in the Playstation game is identical to the PC game's water in appearance. However, unlike the PC Game, Rock Raiders can walk through it. Water can be classed as an Environmental Threat, as it damages all Rock Raiders except Bandit.

Designation in Map File:

Lava

File:Lava.jpg
Lava in a cavern on Planet U.

Lava is the hardest and most dangerous ground type to deal with, and requires the use of the Tunnel Scout (or the Tunnel Transport in some Mods) to cross. The texture for Lava appears roughly the same for all Terrain, although there are some differences in brightness across Cavern Types (i.e., Lava is brighter in Molten Terrain and darker in Icy Terrain).

Lava can often be an Environmental Threat when it is eroding land. No matter the locale, lava is tremendously dangerous and is avoided religiously by any Rock Raiders working near it. Conditions near Lava are typically harsh. Even when Lava isn't eroding, Rock Raiders can still injure themselves by stepping in it accidentally.

Basic lava appears a reddish-orange on the Radar in open caverns.

In the Playstation game, lava does severe damage to anything that gets near it, destroying a vehicle or depleting a Rock Raider's Shield almost instantly. Because of this, the lava here is more realistic, since it appears to be much hotter.

Rubble

The four stages of Rubble

Rubble is a pile of dirt and rock that lies on the Ground. Rubble can typically be Shoveled or Cleared for Ore. Once it has been shoveled, it becomes basic Ground. Rock Raiders walk slower on this than on any other type of ground. However, Monsters walk fastest on rubble. As you dig through rubble, it will go through four stages, getting seemingly less and less. Each time it goes through a stage, it typically yields one piece of Ore. Once it's dug completely, the square turns into basic Ground.

Rubble can form under several different circumstances:

Rubble appears just the same as normal Ground under the Radar, a dark purple. The radar, however, still replaces "Cavern floor" with "rubble".

Rubble that appears in the map at the beginning of the level is designated in the Path.map file with the HEX value 01 00.

Power Path

In-Game Power Path.

A Power Path is an artificial type of Ground. It is made using two pieces of Ore, or one Building Stud by selecting a square of Ground and marking it for power path construction.

It has multiple advantages. First and foremost, they transfer power between Buildings, so that any building linked via power paths to a charged Power Station will be operational. Rock Raiders can also run faster on it than on ground and on rubble. Another important use is for Defense against Eroding Lava. Power Paths, particularly charged ones, which glow a light blue, are very effective at slowing down erosion, which is very useful on the later Levels with Molten Terrain. They do not hold off against the eroding lava indefinitely, and the lava will eventually reduce the path to a partially eroded square of ground.

Power paths can be destroyed manually by the player, as well as by Threats such as Monsters, Cave-Ins, and Landslides. They can temporarily slow down Monsters (which, contrary to Rock Raiders move slowest on paths and fastest on rubble). However, they can easily destroy paths by stomping on them. Power Paths have also been known to cause Power Surges. This occurs when an extremely large number of power paths are placed, which can render any linked Buildings permanently unusable.

They appear a dim grey (if part of a Building) or dim yellow on the Radar, but turn bright yellow when powered.

Power Paths that appear on the map when the level begins are designated in the Path.map file with the HEX value 02 00.

Slimy Slug Hole

A Slimy Slug Hole

Slimy Slug Holes are a special kind of Ground Type, where Slimy Slugs enter and leave the map. They are found most frequently in Rocky Caverns. They cannot be selected, built upon, or obstructed in any way. Several Levels include Slimy Slug holes without any Slugs emerging. For Levels that include Slimy Slug Holes, there are usually multiple spread out across the map. Slimy Slugs will spawn at random in one of these holes. Slimy Slugs will only emerge from their holes once certain conditions have been met, primarily passing a set number of Rock Raiders Teleported or Energy Crystals collected. Under many circumstances, Slimy Slugs will often dig back into their holes after emerging. This will often occur if the hole they exit from is too far away from Rock Raiders HQ. They will also do this when the player gets near the specified conditions mentioned above.

They are indistinguishable from basic Ground on the Radar, appearing as dark purple in open caverns.

Slimy Slug Holes are designated in the Dugg.map file with the HEX value 03 00 for exposed holes and 04 00 for holes in Hidden Caverns.
