Slimy Slugs are a somewhat rare enemy.  They may not seem overly threatening, but they can be a serious threat to Rock Raiders HQ.  They have very large tunnel systems, the entrances to which are Slimy Slug Holes.  The Slugs, like monsters, feed off the power of Energy Crystals.  Slugs typically move at a pokey 0.3 squares/sec, and half this speed across rubble, though when feeling aggressive, in danger, or energized by a snack of Energy Crystals, they can become one of the fastest creatures around.
Unlike the case of emerging monsters, the frequency of slug emergencies and the number of slugs that emerge at a specific time is controlled in the NPL file.

Slimy Slugs emerge from their holes.  Instead of destroying buildings, they latch onto one and suck the power out of any Energy Crystals inside through the building walls.  They also frequently attack in numbers, which can be quite dangerous to Rock Raider outposts.  They are also very mischievous creatures.  They will often briefly pop up out of their holes to see what is going on, and then jump back down into their holes.  They often do this very frequently, each time triggering the "A Slimy Slug is Invading Your Base" alarm.  This can be very misleading, as it makes it hard to notice when they are actually moving out of their holes and heading towards a base.  When Energy Crystals are drained, the only way to restore power to them is to bring them near a Recharge Seam, which are often conveniently found in caverns with Slugs.
In the game, Slimy Slugs will aggressively ram into any nearby Rock Raider, doing minor damage.
Defense
Unlike monsters, which are conventionally taken out using Beam Guns and Electric Fences, Slimy Slugs are often repelled using the Sonic Blaster.  Electric Fences do not protect against slugs, as they can slip right under the beams unharmed.  The Freezer Beam also has no effect on slugs.  The Laser Beam and Pusher Beam both do 5 damage, and the Pusher knocks it back a square and a half.  The Sonic Blaster, after a handful of uses, will scare away any nearby Slugs.  Slugs are ultimately impossible to dispatch, as they will always retreat when they reach below 50% health.  Unlike most Enemies, they do not scare Rock Raiders.
Another defense strategy is to turn off the power on all buildings. Rock Raiders should be warned that turning the power back on while a Slug is still retreating and has not yet burrowed will cause it to turn around and attack again.
One more possible strategy is to build a Mining Laser inside of the base and use it as a defensive weapon. Mining lasers cause considerably more damage to slugs than most standard weapons. However, it is only recommended that operators use this strategy on maps that contain at least one Recharge Seam. Also, operators should be careful not to miss and accidentally damage a building or destroy a Power Path!
Removing every Tool Store in the level is another way to thwart slugs. Since drained Energy Crystals can only be ejected from a Tool Store, removing the building means that you cannot lose crystals. With both a Power Station and an Ore Refinery, a Tool Store is hardly necessary as long as your Rock Raiders already have the tools they need.
