This article is an unfinished work in progress or contains transferred information that needs to be rewritten or reformatted to fit our standards. Please excuse the mess and do not mark for deletion.

These are the various kinds of rock (or as they are frequently referred to, walls).

As opposed to Ground Types, walls surround the Level and under most circumstances, cannot be traversed. Any type of wall except Seams and Solid Rock can be turned into Reinforced Walls, and every wall except Solid Rock and Recharge Seams can be mined. All walls are designated in the Surf.map file.

Dirt

Dirt is the weakest rock type. Rock Raiders can drill it in just four seconds, and vehicles can plow through it almost instantly.

is the most common and the weakest Rock Type. Rock Raiders can drill it in seconds and vehicles will drill through it almost instantly. Dirt is called "Soft Rock" in the Beta tests of the PC Game.

Dirt is designated in the Terrain map with a hexadecimal value of 04 00 or 05 00.

Soil

Soil in a rock texture

Soil is an unused rock type. Its drill times, tool tip name, and textures still exist within the game data, but it cannot be placed in a map without swapping it around with a used wall type by hex-editing the executable file. It was presumably meant to be much weaker than dirt, and unused sound files indicate it may have been originally called "Soft Soil" and Dirt "Hard Soil".

Soil was likely meant to use

Energy Crystal Seam

Ore Seam

Recharge Seam

Soil

Designation in Map File:

  • Soil is not designated in the Surf.map file with any discovered value, though it may have had the HEX value 05 00 before that was changed to become Dirt.

In Other Languages:

  • Dutch: Gruis; this is according to the language files. It may have been named differently in the beta version of LEGO Rock Raiders.

Dirt

Dirt is the most common and the weakest Rock Type. Rock Raiders can drill it in seconds and vehicles will drill through it almost instantly. Dirt is called "Soft Rock" in the Beta tests of the PC Game.

Under the Radar, Dirt appears light pink, and light yellow-green if unexposed.

Designation in Map File:

  • Dirt walls are designated in the Surf.map file with the HEX value 04 00 and 05 00.

In Other Languages:

  • Dutch: Gruis

Loose Rock

Loose Rock

Loose Rock is a common, intermediate Rock Type. It is easily drilled by the Rock Raiders and almost instantly by Vehicles, but it is denser than Dirt, and takes slightly more time and effort to drill. Loose Rock is called "Medium Rock" in the Beta tests of the PC Game.

Under the Radar, Loose Rock appears as a light violet color (and yellow-green if unexposed).

Designation in Map File:

  • Loose Rock walls are designated in the Surf.map file with the HEX value 03 00.

In Other Languages:

  • Dutch: Los Steen

Hard Rock

File:ROCK04.png
Hard Rock

Hard Rock is the hardest Rock Type that can be mined; the hardest rock type is Solid Rock, which cannot be mined. This can only be done by using heavy Vehicle-mounted drills, Mining Lasers, or Dynamite.

Under the Radar, Hard Rock appears violet (and dark green if unexposed).

Designation in Map File:

  • Like other Walls, Hard Rock walls are designated in the Surf.map file with the HEX value 02 00.

In other languages:

  • Dutch: Hard Steen
  • German: Hartes Gestein

Solid Rock

File:ROCK05.png
Solid Rock

Solid Rock is the hardest Rock Type. It cannot be mined without mods, and is destroyable only with Debug Keys. The original name was "Impenetrable Rock." Most levels are surrounded by a thick layer of solid rock, as this acts as a border for the level.

Under the Radar, they appear a very dark purple (and a very dark green if unexposed).

Designation in Map File:

  • Solid Rock walls are designated in the Surf.map file with the HEX value 01 00.

In Other Languages:

  • Dutch: Massief steen
  • Swedish: Fast berg

Seams

Seams are a very rare Rock Type that contain an abundance of a specific Material. They usually take about 4 times as long to drill as Dirt.

Unlike Dirt, Loose Rock, and Hard Rock, they cannot be reinforced.

Energy Crystal Seam

File:ECS.png
Energy Crystal Seam

Energy Crystal Seams yield a total of four Energy Crystals when drilled. Dynamiting a Seam only releases one Energy Crystal and cannot be dynamited again. The Seams appear bright Green under the Radar.

Designation in Map File:

  • Energy Crystal seams are designated in the Surf.map file with the HEX value 0A 00.

Ore Seams

File:OS.png
Ore Seam

Ore Seams yield a total of 4 Ore, when drilled. Dynamiting a Seam only releases one piece of Ore and cannot be dynamited again. They appear Brown under the Radar.

Designation in Map File:

  • Ore Seams are designated in the Surf.map file with the HEX value 08 00.

Recharge Seams

File:Recharge Seam.png
A Recharge Seam

Recharge Seams contain a very rare, hard, and sparkling gem. These walls cannot be drilled, but Rock Raiders can bring drained Energy Crystals there to recharge. Recharge Seams appear Yellow under the Radar. They can occasionally cause Landslides or contribute to Cave-Ins, which can be problematic as they cannot be reinforced or drilled. However, if the walls on either side are destroyed the Recharge Seam will collapse, but still retain the sparkly effect as well as preventing anything from passing through.

Designation in Map File:

  • Recharge Seams are designated in the Surf.map file with the Hex-Editing Program|HEX value 0B 00.
