LWS files are one of the files which make up the models. LWS means LightWave Scene, as it defines the animations for an object. They can even play sound effects, though these must be defined in the Lego.cfg file first.

It is possible, with a text editor, to view and edit LWS files. You can view the nulls, number of frames, objects, and various links without needing Lightwave at all. Since LWS files are merely text files, saving requires no special processes.

For good editing, it is possible to use a program to edit it; however, if you do anything other than edit or add nulls, the model links are exported as regular hard-drive based ones. However, as it is a text file, this can easily be fixed.
