5704 LEGO Racers PC Game was released on July 31, 1999 as part of the LEGO Racers franchise.  The similar Nintendo 64 and PlayStation versions (product numbers 5703 & 5705) were released on October 12 and December 17 of that year respectively.  Later, a Game Boy Color (product number 5719) version of the game was released January 18, 2001.  While it received mix reviews from critics at the time, it remains fondly remembered by those who grew up on it and has a small following.  It also launched the LEGO Racers franchise, which began releasing sets using the LEGO Racers logo starting in 2001 when it became a core theme.  One of the things that set it apart from many other racing games at the time was the ability to build your own car and race it using LEGO pieces from a number of other popular themes at the time, ranging from Pirates, to Fright Knights, to Ice Planet 2002.
LEGO Racers is a 1999 video game developed by High Voltage Software and published by LEGO Media International for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation.

There are a number of different Racing Modes in the first LEGO Racers game, and they can all be selected from the main menu.
Main Race Types
There four main race types:
Circuit Race
See Main Article
Circuit Races are the main race type in the game.  The player must complete these races in order to progress through the game and unlock new Theme Sets and the Race Tracks in those circuits to play in other race modes.  There are seven circuits in total, each containing four individual race tracks (except for the final circuit, which only includes Rocket Racer Run).  Each individual race within the circuit contains three laps and has the player racing against five other computer-based opponents, including the champion for that circuit.  Defeating the champion of that circuit unlocks their theme set for Building Mode.  Whenever a player places in one of the top three positions at the end of a circuit, a short cut-scene plays showing the player receiving their Bronze (for 3rd), Silver (for 2nd), or Gold (for 1st) medal.
Single Race
Once individual race tracks have been unlocked via Circuit Racing, they can be played by themselves in Single Race mode.  The number of opponents in this track can be set in options (anywhere between 1 and 5 opponents), as well as the number of laps (between 1 and 5).  This is the only main mode where Cheats can be enabled; they are automatically disabled for all other race modes.
Versus Race
In a Versus Race, a player can race against a friend in two-player split-screen mode.  However, this mode is only activated if there is a controller plugged in for the 2nd player (this is true for the PC game as well as the N64 and PlayStation versions).  The number of laps (between 1 and 5) can also be set in the options menu.  There are no computer-based racers in this game mode.
Time Race
Time Race mode is one of the most challenging modes in the game.  It pits the player against the clock to try to complete a 3-lap race on any map in record time.  When a player has raced on a particular track in time mode, the fastest time is recorded, and a ghost of the player from that race will appear every time the player races, allowing the player to race against themselves to try to finish in faster and faster times.  The player is also racing against a ghost of Veronica Voltage from her fastest run on each map.  If the player beats Veronica Voltage in every single map, he is awarded with her Time themed set.  She is the only computer-based racer that uses short-cuts in the game, making her particularly challenging to defeat on some maps, compared to the average difficulty of the other racers.  This mode also has a different organization of Power-Ups than the other race modes.  The only power-ups are White Bricks and Green Bricks, except in select areas where there might be other Power-Ups that are used for activating short-cuts.
Other Types
Although not strictly a main racing mode, there is one other mode of racing:
Test Drive
Test Driving is a fifth mode of racing, but isn't one of the main race types.  It is mainly useful for test driving newly built cars in Building Mode.  This mode is selectable from the Build menu, and places the player on Test Drive Track.  There is no time limit, no opponents, no number of laps, and no designated route.  The player can exit this mode whenever they like via the pause menu or by driving back into the garage.  There are a number of Power-Ups scattered throughout the track, but only two White Bricks.  However, like in Single Race mode, cheats can be used here.
