User:Jessietail/AlecRN's New Rock Raiders

From RRU Knowledge Base

Not very long ago, when I was 14 I remembered that old game Rock Raiders so started playing it again. I realized it was as fun as I remember, just a lot simpler and easier. So I talked to my friend some, and we started wondering if there was such a thing to a Rock Raiders Wikia. I searched it on Google and couldn't resist helping out so here I am.

My career of choice is video game designer, and I've been doing that for most my life now and when I see some of my favorite games like this I can't help but start thinking up some sort of remake for it. So if my remake starts working out pretty well I'll add stuff on here and see what you guys think about it. Note I am only designing it, not actually developing it, but if it works I might try. I would really appreciate any help whatsoever.

I don't really have a title yet... I'm not really sure what to call it anyway. It's not a sequel or anything, just a remake of the original. I'll be working on this for a while but here goes. If this gets big I'll move it to its own page.

I wanted it to be harder and more sophisticated than before. The one before was meant for children of a younger age, but even then I wanted something more. So here are some stuff I'm planning for it, and how I worked out what the new stuff would be.

Thought Process

First I thought, "What are they trying to do?" Well, they need to get the L.M.S. Explorer powered up so they can head home. The best way to do that is to collect energy crystals. So that's the objective "Collect energy crystals."

What are the steps in doing that, however?

  1. Location: You need to find them, first, before you can get at them.
  2. Excavatation: Now that you found them, they must be dug out.
  3. Transportation: Great, so they're out of the wall and lying in a pile of rubble. Now they need to be gathered and transported back.
  4. Storage: They need to be stored until enough are gathered.
  5. Protection: Rock Monsters and Slimy Slugs just love those crystals, so there needs to be protective measures put in place.

Now that we have the steps listed, we need to list the means by which the Rock Raiders have to carry out these tasks.

  1. Location
    • Geologists
    • Hover Scout
    • Tunnel Scout
    • Geological Center
    • Scanner Upgrades
  2. Excavation
    • Workers
    • Dynamite (Explosive Expert)
    • Small Digger
    • Small Mobile Laser Cutter
    • Granite Grinder
    • Large Mobile Laser Cutter
    • Chrome Crusher
    • Mining Laser
  3. Transportation
    • Workers
    • Small Digger (It has a cargo bin)
    • Small Transport Truck
    • Loader Dozer (Could carry stuff)
    • Chrome Crusher (Technically a vehicle with cargo)
    • Freight Line
    • Freight Station
    • Road
    • Bridge
  4. Storage
    • Tool Store
    • Warehouse
  5. Protection
    • Soldiers
    • Electric Fence

So these are what they have available to them to use. But each of these in turn has needs, and each of those needs needs. I split the things up into three categories: structures (buildings), workers (Rock Raiders), and vehicles. Here are what they require

  • Structures
    • Power
    • Materials
    • Construction
    • Maintenance
    • Upgrades
  • Workers
    • Immigration (Need to get to planet, can't be born or created)
    • Food
    • Water
    • Air
    • Shelter/Sleep
    • Tools
    • Training
    • Medical Attention
  • Vehicles
    • Materials
    • Construction
    • Fuel
    • Maintenance
    • Upgrades
    • Operators

So how do we fulfill each of these needs? That's where support components come in, things that do not directly help the objective, but support the things that carry out the objective. Here are what I figured for each of those.

  • Power: Power Station, Energy Banks, Geothermal Plant, Hydroelectric Plant, Power Lines, Power Path
  • Materials: Ore, Ore Refinery (Most of this is same as for getting Energy Crystals so I won't repeat)
  • Construction (Structure): Workers, Engineers
  • Maintenance: Engineers
  • Upgrades: Engineers
  • Immigration: Tool Store, Teleport Pad, Super Teleport
  • Food: Not sure yet
  • Water: Water Pump, Water Pipe
  • Air: Support Station
  • Shelter/Sleep: Quarters
  • Tools: Tool Store
  • Training: Teams of specialists already on L.M.S. Explorer
  • Medical Attention: Medics, Infirmaries
  • Construction (Vehicle): Engineers, Garage
  • Fuel: Power is easiest to get so I thought this would be same as Power above.
  • Operators: Just trained specialists, such as drivers, sailors, and pilots

So let's add all that together (in no order of appearance in lists)...

Infrastructure

Infrastructure represents not buildings, but all the structures that allow buildings, workers, and vehicles to work together smoothly.

Freight Line

These are tracks for the quick transport of cargo from one area to another. Freight can only be loaded and unloaded from Freight Stations. These work well for mining areas far from the HQ.

Electric Fence

An easy solution to the Rock Monster problem. These buildings will stop monsters, provided they have power.

Power Lines

These transport electricity long distances without many materials. They are more efficient to use for long distances than power paths.

Power Path

Very useful. These assist the movement of workers and vehicles, and conveniently double as power lines.

Water Pipe

Used to transport water long distances from Water Pumps to quarters.

Road

This speeds up the movement of land vehicles by a very large amount. More efficient for long distances than power paths, but bad for short distances.

Bridge

Basically a road that crosses water. Can cross magma too, but requires maintenance fairly often.

Structures

These are buildings for various purposes. Some play a direct part in the objective, while others support the components to that purpose. Depending on the building, engineers may be required to be present for construction.

Geological Center

Outfitted with a sonar for peering into nearby rock. Can detect where energy crystals most likely are, and also view density of rock to find the best drilling path.

Mining Laser

A building that can rapidly blast through rock with its laser. Requires a worker to operate.

Freight Station

This is required to unload and load from freight lines. This looks like the Upgrade Station. Requires a worker to operate.

Tool Store

A very basic and important building. Has a low-level teleporter (up to 300 lbs.) and also contains an array of tools for workers. Can store up to 20 ore and energy crystals, and also has a very limited refinery for converting ore into usable building material.

Warehouse

Used to store large amounts of ore, energy crystals, and building material. Most efficient when placed next to a freight station, as it can be loaded directly.

Power Station

This is used to manage and store unused power. It's abilities to produce electricity itself are very limited, it most only acts as a substation to other power plants. It can extract power from crystals, but leaves them uncharged.

Energy Banks

This building stores energy crystals. As a power plant, can be hooked up to the power station. When energy is required, it will automatically extract it from stored crystals. When there is unused energy, it will recharge as many crystals as possible.

Geothermal Plant

Can produce energy from heat. Works best when placed in a warm place, like next to magma or other volcanic phenomena.

Hydroelectric Plant

Can produce energy from flowing water. More energy is produced the faster water is flowing.

Ore Refinery

Can convert large amounts of ore into usable building material, and quickly.

Teleport Pad

A more powerful teleporter. Can teleport up to 800 lbs.

Super Teleport

An extremely powerful teleporter. Can teleport up to 10 tons (20,000 lbs)

Water Pump

Will pump water from underground lakes, purify it, then pump it into water pipes where it can be sent to a quarters.

Support Station

Provides air for workers, either by filtering the whole cavern or refilling individual air tanks.

Quarters

A place of rest and shelter for workers. Also is where water goes so it may be used. Workers will require some time resting here every so often.

Garage

Used to build, repair, and upgrade vehicles. Requires engineers.

Infirmary

These treat injured workers, but require a staff of medics.

Vehicles

Vehicles make many jobs easier, and work smoothly with many systems, improving on the things workers do.

Hover Scout

A fast vehicle that has the main purpose of helping geologists get around to find potential energy crystal-rich spots. Also has a small scanner already on board. (Got that idea from The Lair of the Rockwhales)

Tunnel Scout

Similar to the hover scout, but flies so can move across many obstacles easily.

Small Digger

A small vehicle with fairly weak drills. Although mainly an excavation vehicle, it has a cargo bin for transporting materials it finds.

Small Mobile Laser Cutter

A very slow vehicle that mines with its laser.

Granite Grinder

One of the more powerful excavation vehicles, this one walks one two legs and has a huge drill.

Large Mobile Laser Cutter

An improvement on the Small Mobile Laser Cutter, this can blast through rock much faster.

Small Transport Truck

A very quick way to transport materials from one place to another, second only to the freight line.

Loader Dozer

This vehicle replaces the worker's shovel and can also carry a lot of materials at once.

Chrome Crusher

Undoubtedly the most powerful drilling vehicle, this can cut through even the densest rock in seconds. It even has a laser and radar.

Cargo Carrier

This huge vehicle can carry the most of all vehicles, including other vehicles, and rides on the water.

Tunnel Transporter

The most efficient transporter, this can move huge amounts of material and vehicles across any obstacle very quickly.

Workers

Workers, as I will call Rock Raiders, can do a large variety of jobs, including constructing vehicles and buildings that do most of the tasks they do, easier. They come in two kinds, specialists and workers. Specialists are highly trained individuals that can mostly avoid grunt work workers because of their training. However, should some labor be required, specialists will gladly step up to the job. This is a list of the different kinds of specialists.

Geologist

Very important. They find what spots most likely carry energy crystals through various methods, either scanners or just inspecting the rock walls.

Explosive Expert

These workers are trained to handle powerful dynamite, which can cut through rock much faster than drills.

Soldier

Trained to use weapons, soldiers are the people enlisted when Rock Monsters, Slimy Slugs, and even bats, spiders, and snakes. They usually patrol areas to attack invaders they see.

Engineer

Another very important position, engineers oversee the construction of many buildings, build the vehicles, and also manage and perform upgrades and repairs on various things.

Driver

Trained to operate land vehicles.

Sailor

Trained to operate water vehicles.

Pilot

Trained to operate flying vehicles.

Medic

Experts of medicine, medics help injured workers and staff the infirmaries.

I'd love to hear any feedback at all. This isn't all I have yet, I still have more to write.
